Spring is finally upon us and the Philly Home Girls are ready to get out and explore some of our favorite neighborhoods. One neighborhood we’re particularly excited about is Washington Square West. It’s got all the appeal of being in center city, but still feels like home with the welcoming neighbors and small tree lined streets. It’s a great neighborhood for someone who’s moving to Philadelphia for the first time or has lived here longer but is looking for a change. Washington Square West is really perfect for all.
Right in the heart of the Washington Square West neighborhood you’ll find Jefferson University and Hospital & Pennsylvania Hospital. They are both teaching hospitals well known for their excellent care. In the spring you’ll find many students joining the hospitals whether it’s for the beginning of their careers or for residencies. You might even be one of them! The Washington Square West neighborhood has so much to offer to those in careers or school at Jefferson & Penn Hospitals. Public transit is easy to maneuver and will take you anywhere you want but when you’re living so close you may not need it!
Let’s start at 1026 Pine St 7. This lovely Washington Square West rental is in the heart of some of the best Center City has to offer, including major bus routes, bars, restaurants, shopping, and theater. This town-home comes with a fully equipped eat in kitchen with state of the art appliances and laundry on the lower level. You'll be greeted with a fantastic wood burning fireplace in the living room, perfect for cozy evening. Glide upstairs and view the large family room or potential bedroom with wall mounted TV and full bath. This room is a perfect family room, or can be re-purposed into a home office. An exceptional Master suite with a luxurious bath on the top floor completes this lovely home. 1026 Pine St has a host of unique architectural details, and includes a speaker system and central air throughout the home. Step outside and view the lush shared courtyard, which is perfect for getting to know your neighbors or just having a peaceful grilling session in the warm months on the home's built-in gas grill. If you’re not feeling like grilling, you might want to take a walk in the neighborhood and visit some of the great amenities Washington Square West has to offer.
There are so many great restaurants nearby, many of which offer special deals just for Jefferson employees and students. To start there is Cheu Noodle Bar, at 10th and Locust Streets. They offer a new take on traditional ramen and pho dishes. The food is amazing and the service is always quick and friendly. It’s a small space so be prepared. We recommend keeping your party small and sitting at the bar. The bar faces the open kitchen and you’ll get dinner and a show watching the chefs at work. They offer a 10% discount if you’re an employee or student at Jefferson. With a deal like that, you’ll be sure to want to stop by!
Just around the corner is Strangelove’s Beer Bar, at 11th and Walnut Streets. It’s the place in the neighborhood to grab a great craft beer and delicious southern influenced food. The interior will make you wish you lived there, with the modern and sophisticated marble bar and chevron pattern mural upstairs. Speaking of the second floor, they often host private events and have hosted many for Jefferson employees in the past. They offer great prices for all their private events. They also have a great late night happy hour on Tuesday evenings. Select American drafts, house wine, well drinks and super tasty happy hour food specials are all just $4! This happy hour is perfect for when you’re just getting off of that late night shift or leaving your last class for the day. Strangelove’s also offers this same happy hour deal Monday through Friday from 5pm to 7pm.
Around the corner is the Caribou Café, a small Parisian bistro and café. You’ll feel like you’ve suddenly been transported to France with the stylish but quaint décor. The food is delicious and fresh. We highly recommend the onion soup; it pairs perfectly with a fresh baguette. With 15% off your entire meal as a Jefferson employee or student, you’ll be dreaming of eating here daily.
More of an early bird? Don’t worry Knead Bagels, at 7th and Walnut Streets, has you covered. They are known for their mouth-watering bagels and house-made spreads. Baked fresh daily, they have both traditional and “non-traditional” flavors. Try the togarashi bagel with scallion lime cream cheese; it’s spicy and delicious. Every day they offer an early morning happy hour from 6:30 am to 8:30 am where you can get a “non-traditional” bagel with spread and a 12oz coffee for just $4.95! It’s the perfect place to grab your coffee fix before heading into that early shift or class.
There’s no shortage of great things to do in Washington Square West. With many more businesses that offer great deals for Jefferson employees, you’ll always have something exciting to do. After you’re done with all your school work that is. We can’t wait to help you settle in, and show you around. Let’s meet at Knead Bagels soon and get the tour started.
