GERMANTOWN

Nearby Neighborhoods: Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls, West Germantown, Northwest Philadelphia

Known for: A rich history, the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Germantown and the sight of the first ever American protest against slavery.

A storied neighborhood in the Northwest situated along Germantown Avenue. As one of the oldest settlements in Philadelphia, it goes without saying, Germantown has a rich history. It has one of the highest concentrations of historic resources in the country—estates that set the stage for Revolutionary War battles, homes that were once part of the Underground Railroad, and the site of the first anti-slavery protest in the country.

The Germantown Historical Society has done a great job preserving the architectural beauty of places like Deshler-Morris House (George Washington’s summer home), the Cliveden. Today, restored 300-year-old colonial homes and sprawling green spaces intertwine with the distinctive eateries and shops to create a vibrant neighborhood rooted in history. The community and the homes are just as diverse with families and commuters dwelling in Victorian beauties, row homes, and mansions, each with an undeniable charm.
